endoscopic variceal band ligation

Esophageal varices are swollen veins in the esophagus. These veins can enlarge considerably and can be subject to hemorrhage that can damage the gastrointestinal tract. Esophageal varices are a potentially serious condition. There is, however, a treatment that can help people with these engorged vessels, called endoscopic variceal ligation — EVBL, for short.

While giving EVBL, a scope with a small camera at its end is gently put through to the esophagus. This lets the doctor clearly see the swollen veins. The doctor will then view the veins and tie the bleeding veins off with small rubber bands. This is crucial as it prevents any further damage to the esophagus. Eventually after some time, no worries, these little bands will simply drain off themselves and the human body will absorb them and there is no issue.

Tying off bleeding vessels to prevent further damage

Published studies demonstrated that EVBL was very effective for controlling bleeding from esophageal varices. Of the patients with this condition, this means that there's a good chance that most of them succeed with this treatment. On the other hand, this is good news for those who have this condition because it allows them to skip major, complicated, extended recovery-surgeries.
